Over at PitchDark they’re talking about zombies this week. Now we all know these fearsome creatures, especially from recent phenomenas such as The Walking Dead and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. And there are of course the Voodoo legends of corpses raised from the dead to eat your brains and conquer your enemies. But the legends go back even farther, centering in Western African, where Voodoo (then called Vodou) originated.
Even the original tales of vampires from eastern Europe had these dazzling monsters as nothing better than walking corpses. It wasn’t until the Victorian era that vampires became “cool” thanks to Bram Stoker and his contemporaries who raised these monsters up from the dirty grave.
But zombies stayed dirty, and they stayed un-sexy. Or did they? YA has proven lately that if there’s a monster in popular culture, a teenage heroine will fall in love with it. Check out these zombie thrillers, and a few zombie romances.
