It’s official: John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars is going to be a movie. Here’s the scoop on who’s in on the project:
Fox 2000 has brought on filmmaker Josh Boone to direct The Fault in Our Stars movie adaptation. Last year, Boone wrote and directed an original film called Stuck in Love.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, the screenwriting duo behind (500) Days of Summer, will write the script. Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen, the producers of The Twilight Saga film franchise, will produce this project. (From GalleyCat)
And some casting rumors:
“The Fault of Our Stars” secured its spot as the bestselling novel of 2012, and with confirmed news of a movie adaptation in the works, the IB Times reported this Sunday, Feb. 17, that actress Shailene Woodley of “Divergent” is now rumored to be a top casting candidate for the lead role of Hazel Grace Lancaster…
Producers Nuestadter and Weber are expected to begin producing the hit novel this summer, and their casting actress in mind for Hazel Grace’s character — none other than Shailene Woodley — is already being approved by the author, it seems. (From the Examiner)

If you were going to pull an all-around winner from the Goodreads Choice Awards winner this year, it would be The Fault in Ours Stars by John Green, which came in with 10,000+ more votes than any other category winner, at 37,438. Gone Girl followed it up with 27,502 (absolutely smoking J.D. Robb at 6,364 votes for Celebrity in Death). Then Insurgent with 23,827 votes (and 20,328 votes for Veronica as Goodreads Choice Author). All three of these books beat out this year’s bestselling series Fifty Shades of Grey (the third book came out first in Romance with 22,976 votes).
When you break down the two young adult categories, you see an overwhelming number of votes for the top titles and then the runner-ups grouped together in a somewhat tighter pack, dwindling down to titles that have less than 1,000 votes. The runner-up in YA Fiction, Easy by Tammara Weber, came in at 8,890 votes, with Slammed by Colleen Hoover and Out of Sight, Out of Time by Ally Carter following it at 6,495 and 5,620 respectively. When you scroll down to the 20th nominee, you find Something Like Normal by Trish Doller at 161 votes. Even Ellen Hopkins is down at the bottom with her newest book Tilt scoring only 276 votes, and The Miseducation of Cameron Post, which we’ve seen pop up on numerous book of the year lists already, only scored 196 votes. John Green’s newest masterpiece swept all these others away, earning 44% of the total votes.
Looking at the YA Genre category, you see a similar story, with one small difference: the space between winner (Insurgent) and runner-up (City of Lost Souls) is far smaller: 23,827 to 14,814. That puts Insurgent with 27.7% of the votes, and City of Lost Souls with 15.3%. Also, in the genre category the bottom title, The Diviners by Libba Bray, comes in last with 523 votes (nearly 400 more than Something Like Normal). Another interesting thing to note: there are 10,000+ more votes overall for YA Genre than Fiction: 85,029 to 96,340. This begs the question: are YA readers really more interested in genre, or did some just vote in one category and not the other? It will be interesting to see if Goodreads releases any indepth statistics about the voting.
You can definitely make an argument for the fact that books more recently released (such as The Diviners and Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Boys) suffered in the voting because of their newness (both released this fall). But they are the minority among the bottom. The Miseducation of Cameron Post has been out since last February.
Here are the final statistics:
- 1,156,852 total votes
- The Fault in Ours Stars: 3.2% of the total votes
- Insurgent: 2.05%
- Gone Girl: 2.37%
- The Casual Vacancy: 0.99%
